Sedona, Arizona is home to the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. The City of Sedona was founded in 1896 on land that now includes parts of downtown and the plaza at Fourth Street and Broadway. The first guns used by American Indians in what is now Sedona were made from animal hides. In 1868, Indian trader George Hennepin sold firearms to John Wesley Powell during his exploratory trip through the area. A few years later, a man named Purdy built a gunsmith shop on East Sixth Avenue in Sedona for purposes of manufacturing firearms and ammunition. In 1898, two barrels of powder were fired off from a rifle at an event known as "The Great Game." It was one of the earliest examples of using artillery to bombard targets inside and outside Sedona. Over time, firing ranges were built within the city limits and elsewhere around Sedona until finally they closed down in 1955 due to public health concerns associated with high levels of lead exposure from firing munitions near schools and playgrounds. In 1951, ownership passed from Purdy’s son-in-law (Winfrey) to Winchester Repeating Arms Company after Winfrey’s death. Between 1899-1955, over 1 million rounds were manufactured at Winchester's plant in Sedona alone! Gun owner Philando Castile died just three days after being shot by police officer Jeronimo Yanez while fleeing their car following a traffic stop;Castile had been carrying a handgun permits under both his state license plates (TX) & his federal permit #92426 (AZ). After Yanez's shooting death was ruled justifiable homicide by Tucson Police Department investigators who reviewed body camera footage released by Castile's family[1], all AZ handgun laws went into effect automatically retroactively on December 14th,. As part of this broad overhaul, Trooper Jason Stockdale was given authority by then Governor Jan Brewer to enforce new gun laws statewide which took effect effective January 1st,, 2015

In 1909, after hearing about claims being made for mining rights in Sedona County by David Paddock and others, President William Howard Taft ordered US military forces stationed at Fort Bliss to investigate these claims. After months of surveying and examining the area, they found no evidence that any such resources existed, but did order Paddock's group to stop exploration until further notice.On April 16th 1912, the town of Sedona was incorporated as a city with a population of 3200 people when it became apparent that an open-air market on Navajo Nation land would provide greater economic opportunities than anything available within its borders alone
