In 1867, John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring these remote regions and sent out a reconnaissance party including himself and two assistants named Richard Lanyon and Tom Collins to explore nearby Cochise County Territory (later Coconino County) further south than any other nation or individual before him. In October 1867 they reached what today is called Green Valley – a salt flat with mineral rights dating back to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended Mexican–American War hostilities It appears that these men may have been exploring areas now within Sedona Municipal Limits
Sedona is located in Sedona County, Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,491. The Sedona area has been inhabited by the Mohave and Pima cultures for over 10,000 years. In 1896 a group of Englishmen named Mount Mead became the first permanent settlement in what is now Sedona when they established a post office on the east side of Valley View Road. The following year two other Englishmen named Mount Defiance and Mount Enterprise were established on opposite ends of town (the former across from Oak Creek Canyon), becoming known as "the Twin Cities." In 1912 an Italian American named Giovanni Valentini settled on land east of town and began to build a farmstead that would become known as Villa Valentini. In 1915 another Italian American, Amicardo Marchetti bought part of Villa Valentini and built a larger home there that became known as both Villa Valentini Manor and Casa Marchetti (later renamed CastleMar). In 1927 Bonnie And Clyde invaded Sedona while driving through it with their carny friends Harry Parsons and John Dillinger in order to rob banks in Phoenix
