Two years later, he opened Chandler's Department Store which remains open today as Scottsdale's oldest department store. By 1925, J C Penney had added its first store to the mix with its new headquarters building on South First Avenue across from University Hills Hospital. In 1957, Kmart opened its first location in Scottsdale when it moved from Tucson to nearby Mesa. Sears followed suit two years later and anchor stores were also stationed here including Kay Jewelers until 1981 when Sears closed all their locations in America except for some small branches inside big box retailers such as Walmart. With no major anchors left downtown after1981 any shopping mall development started off slowly but steadily over time starting with Venetian Place mall opening up next to University Hill Hospital back in 1990 until finally PHX Sky Harbor Center project bringing an entire wing of high-end stores within short distance of downtown completed in 2013 giving this old shopping district yet another shot at life It wasn't until 2002 when Bob Hope Open Air Theatre moved into its current location just outside of town along McDowell Road making it one of only a handful cities or towns around the world where an outdoor theater still exists today This makes Scottsale extremely popular tourist destination especially during events like summerstock or wheeling and dealing season like Christmas etc... Simply put if there is something going on anywhere north west then people are usually out & about trying to find out about it
