The mission was abandoned by 1771 due to hostile Apache Indians living nearby and it wasn’t until 1823 that Europeans started settling here as part of Treaty 6 (the San Carlos Mission Purchase) which ended more than two years of conflict between Mexico and 1813 United States over land claims along both sides of the Colorado River system. After years spent planning and construction, Scottsdale’s first building opened its doors on December 8th 1914 – just five months after Valley City began developing as a destination for motorists traveling east from Phoenix via Central Avenue (now Loop 101). Today Valley City is home to less than 1 percent of all Scottsdale’s population but it still boasts some impressive relics from its past including: Pioneer Hotel – built in 1915 as a hotel/motel for US military personnel stationed at Yuma Air Force Base; First Presbyterian Church – built in 1916; Valley View Casino & Resort – completed in 1986; and Scenic Drive -one mile long lined with beautiful public parksland full of palm trees and blue skies -home to many famous celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood etc., among others.
