The first settlement in what would become Scottsdale was made on December 12, 1887 when John Waddell and his family came from Illinois to trade goods with the Mohave Indians near present-day Phoenix. In 1912, J.P. Morgan put up money for an irrigation project that led to today's downtown Scottsdale district. The influx of workers in World War II changed howScottsdale functioned as a town with businesses coming and going as people moved to service military duty or found new opportunities elsewhere during that time period; however, many residents still lived in older streets like Vine Street and Peoria Avenue through out their lives even though they left Scottsdale behind during those years! After the war ended and people returned home, they started developing new neighborhoods around downtown called North Towne and East Village which are now some of Scottsdsales most popular areas In 1957, architect Edward Glidden designed what would be known as "The Desert Inn" – later renamed "The Camelback Inn". Designed by Glidden for owner Harry Chandler Jr., it quickly became one of Scottsdales most popular tourist destinations due to its complete lack of services other than rooming houses (it still does not have any!) There were also golf courses available at this time but only Chandler could afford them so they never really took off commercially like others did after he bought them . It wasn't until 1980 when developer Stan Kroenke purchased The Desert Inn from Harry Chandler Jr., making it one of his biggest investments ever; Kroenke had originally planed on turning it into a luxury hotel but decided against it because he realized just how valuable single occupancy rooms could be within walking distance of all major shopping centers throughout Phoenix! He then turned around and redesigned it into what we see today – one of Phoenix' top tourist attractions with over 100 rooms including several restaurants/cafés inside along with indoor pools/spas! He also built almost all south side arterials including Camelback Road which runs parallel to Second Avenue West from Shea Boulevard northward to Paradise Valley Road; this gave him control over mucho traffic shaping ability which helped contribute greatly towards his success later on . Although less famous outside of Phoenix proper – thanks largely to Kroenke's decision not to develop east Mesa altogether despite being offered millions – The Desert Inn has managed to maintain its popularity among tourists throughout the years by consistently adding new amenities such as an outdoor pool overlooking McDowell Lake (soon followed by another indoor pool), banquet facilities for wedding receptions (. . .) etc.; although there have been occasional disputes about development rights within adjacent neighborhoods over who should get access to these amenities 😉 !! lol

On October 15, 1930 a tornado destroyed most of downtown Phoenix with winds up to 100 mph (160 km/h). No one was killed or injured; however many homes were damaged or destroyed and over $1 million (USD) in damage was done statewide On December 12th 1930, during Christmas Eve celebrations when the wind knocked down power lines near Camelback Mountain hotel, temperatures dropped below freezing point inside buildings resulting in several injuries including fatalities caused by hypothermia while many passersby got caught inside cars unable to get out until it stopped raining outside- these conditions led then Mayor Harry Chandler Ivey to order all businesses open for lunch without any warning being given so customers could eat undercover! This event helped give birth to winter tourism as well as giving prominence away fromPhoenix's omnipresent summer heat known locally as 'the sun only zone'. By 1933 there were over 150 businesses in downtown Phoenix with only 5% vacancy rate although some business owners received threatening letters from civic leaders citing fire code violations committed by their competitors during that time period claiming that they would have lost business if they did not comply- this type OF letter writing became common throughout history be it political correctness or anti-business sentimentality . Although much progress has been made since those early days within city limits especially during recent decades thru increased development especially along 6th Avenue corridor things still cannot compare across cultural divide quality of life gap between North /Central Valley &SW Valley continues vast
