The name change came after developer J P McCloskey proposed that Scottsdale be renamed Sun City because it would be more visible from Interstate 10 and sunlight would flood into downtown from other areas of town. He also suggested that it should have an "S" for sheriff since many people thought Phoenix looked like something out of a science fiction movie. On November 3, 1924, Scottdale became an official city with Mayor Ladd Hensley serving as mayor pro tempore and Vice President Harry Wigmore as secretary for public works. In 1940, following World War II when Mesa was annexed by Phoenix, Scottsdale had 1% of the metropolitan area's population but 5% of its land area while Phoenix had 100% of the metropolitan area's population and 95% of its land area. However, voter approval on February 14th gavePhoenix full control over all school buildings within their boundaries- even if they were not built until after annexation; this action helped spur development around University Drive between Shea Boulevard and McDowell Road which now forms part of downtown Phoenix (the old heartland shopping district). In 1949 Glendale was annexed by Phoenix making Scottsdale compete against Glendale for services regarding zoning changes (Glendale got rezoned to allow high-end shopping centers while Scottsdalewas rezoned to allow open space). By 1957 there were no schools left in Downtown Mesa so voters approved Measure M which channeled river water towards McDowell Road instead creating what is now known as Camelback Heights/Scotts Valley Village which began housing developments such as Northtuition Center (now known as Talking Stick Resort) on Indian School Road east of I-10 on what used to be called Camelback Gulch before trading names with nearby Glendale ([now Anthem] Shopping Center). A major development project during this time was Sunrise Canyon Parkway which connected Sunrise Valley Shopping Centre northward via Deer Valley Rd & Indian School Rd past Apache Junction then southward past Gila River Rancho Mirage into Casa Grande where it met US 66 just outside Paradise Hills today before continuing south along Sunrise Dr near OSU campus through Tempe until terminating at First Avenue NE near Sky Harbor Airport today - bringing residential development upriver towards Peoria off I-10 opposite Capitol Hill today that includes luxurious Hyatt Regency hotels including the world-famous Hyatt Regency Fountain Square & Ariana Grande Casino . It wasn’t until 1968 when new neighborhoods sprang up around University Village – Desert Vista to the east, Apple Valley to the west – giving birth to many iconic names such as 110th Street SW., Camelback East Side., Talking Stick Place., Sun Devil Stadium/ Stadium Drive South/Sunrise Canyon Parkway., etc... Today much older neighborhoods still remain throughout downtown including Midtown Cottonwood Lake,[later called Near Westside],[antiquated 1880s industrial neighborhood], Chandler Heights,[ later known asEastgate], Oriental Park[ later known Ascot],[Shopping center district centered around Mayo Clinic Plaza], etc... Many people say that without these communities Riverside may never have developed either because access to jobs or transportation would have been much different or simply because there are few places within walking distance regardless of price point."
