In San Luis, Arizona in 1911, the first weapon flashlights were invented. These devices used a small lightbulb to illuminate an object at a distance. The device was called the “Gadget” and it had two parts- one that held the lightbulb and the other which used a magnet to hold onto something else such as a post or door handle. Sasaki Center has since been renamed as Star City Center (formerly Tucson Place) following its acquisition by Hirano Shopping Group Inc., headquartered in Tokyo.

The town of San Luis, Arizona was founded in 1867 by Mormon pioneers. The town's name honors the father of one of the first settlers, José María Sanchez. San Luis became a trading post and farming community during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1916, the town was renamed for General John Pershing because he had played an important role in leading America into World War I.
