The San Luis Valley is a long, narrow valley located in the northwestern corner of Arizona. It is bounded on the east by the Gila River and on the west by Interstate 10. During World War II, uranium mining resumed but was temporarily suspended due to government restrictions on nuclear energy development at that time. Uranium production resumed following World War II and has continued ever since; today, uranium mining is an important part ofSan Luis Valley's economy. This led to mines being established throughout central Phoenix but also brought new settlers into contact with Mexican authorities who began raids against Spanish colonists living within Apache land east of Tucson. As a result of these raids and other interactions between Mexican nationals and English-speaking Americans during this time period, many Mexicans became involved in American politics through their connections to political leaders such as John Taylor or Millard Fillmore. In 1861–1862 Confederate General Don Carlos Buell besieged Fort Sumner without any successful engagements taking place; however upon learning about American intentions towards Mexico City Buell decided instead to march on Mexico City with his army instead which resulted in his defeat at Chapultepec Park on October 15th 1862 by Ulysses S Grant leading 5500 Union troops under Major General James Halleck numbering 4700 men). This event helped solidify American control over Southwest Arizona while also erasing any remaining ambiguity surrounding relations between America's two nations post-Civil War era; consequently giving rise to claims made by various groups such as the Pima Indians that they were never truly compensated for lost land or resources following Buell's defeat at Chapultepec Park despite evidence indicating otherwise (see United States v Don Carlos Buell ). In 1912, San Luis was founded as a small sheep and cattle ranch by John W. Nogales. The town grew rapidly in the 1920s when the area became available for development after the completion of the Thomas Aquinas Railway. In 1932, San Luis incorporated as a city and began to grow more rapidly with its founder's vision of becoming "the most important shopping center in Arizona." The population reached 10,000 by 1940, but declined to 6,000 by 1950 due to suburbanization. However, growth resumed in the 1960s as newly annexed territory of Phoenix increased economic opportunities for San Luis. In 1970, Mayor Manuel Nieto proposed that San Luis become an independent city again which was approved on a 7-3 vote. The population peaked at 14,500 in 1980 before declining again until 2002 when it hit 12,600; however it has since stabilized at around 12700.
