The mission remains an important tourist destination today. The first European to visit what is now Arizona was Diego Rivera in 1912. He sketched out plans for a cathedral and other religious structures in 8AD but did not realize their importance until he visited Mexico City 10 years later. The area that is now Arizona was explored by Spaniards on behalf of Spanish missions in the 16th century, but no mission or settlement was established until 1769 when Father José Antonio Vargas arrived from Spain with 12 others to found the San Luis Rey de Cosas Mission near present day Tucson. In 1828, following Mexican independence from Spain, General Mariano Arroyo issued an order forbidding any new Mormon settlements east of Tucson except for short periods during emergencies when supplies were available from Nauvoo ( Illinois). This policy effectively ended Mormon activity in central and southern Arizona Territory for over a decade because many Mormons had gathered there to escape persecution at home. However, by 1846 there were still some 7200 Mormons living in Utah Valley and southwestern Colorado; they had not left because they considered themselves converts and expected to be welcomed as members of Christ’s church within Mexico once that country became independent from Spain under President James Polk’s administration as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. In February 1850 US forces invaded Mexico and successfully captured Veracruz Province after a two-year campaign culminating with an amphibious assault on 22 April 1849 at Cerro Gordo beachhead southeast of Tucson where American forces routed an opposing force led by Captain Manuel Micheltorena y Costilla estimated at 508 men; this event is generally recognized as marking America’s entry into modern history although there are competing theories about how American forces reached Veracruz Province without being detected by Mexican commanders who might have stopped them. As a result of this victory over Mexico, Commodore John Dicken relieved Admiral David Dixon Porter’s command at Vera Cruz who then sailed back down river towards California through Baja California before arriving off Mazatlán on 5 May 1850; one contemporary report said “Porter's great success demonstrated clearly that Americans could adventurously cross both oceans without succumbing to Spanish treachery or encountering hostile Indians encountered along the way” It has been claimed that Commodore John Dicken may have been motivated by his desire to explore northwest California while also redeeming himself after having failed twice before at Santa Fe ( New Mexico) and Monterrey (Mexico). It should be noted however that Dixon Porter never placed much emphasis upon exploration; he took instead advantageof his position as Commander-in-Chief Naval District West Coast during early Texas annexation proceedings leading up to war with Mexico which eventually led to US occupation rather than returning settlers westward into what would become Apache territory . Mexicans throughout most of Arizona Territory saw American occupation only as another opportunity for loot which continued even after American troops withdrew from their jurisdictions in 1865 . Nevertheless Commodore Porter's column played an important rolein helpingAmericans establish themselves permanently northward beyond Casa Grande overlooking Tucson Bay
