The San Luis Valley was formed by the Colorado River and its tributaries as they converged in central Arizona. The valley was built on the remains of ancient Pima, Oatman, and Navajo cultures. By 1990, however, the population had increased to over seven hundred people living in thirty-one buildings. The economy relies heavily on agriculture; crops include cotton, wheat, corn, beans (pinto), watermelon and tomatoes. Residents are proud of their history and culture which includes numerous days during summertime when they participate in traditional Native American ceremonies such as Running with Bullocks or Big Game Hunter Days.
