The history of gun targets in San Luis, Arizona goes back to the early 1800s. The first target guns were brought overland from England and used for target practice on the family farmstead. By the turn of the century, there were several shooting galleries located in this small town, most notably The Shooting Gallery at 6th and Garnet Streets. With so many people shooting at various targets out there, it was necessary to have a place where they could all come together and shoot one another at close range. This is when The Shooting Gallery became known as "The Gun Showplace." It lasted until around 1925 when it moved to its current location on 7th Street. From then on, it was home to numerous ranges, tournaments, and exhibitions throughout the years. Eventually, these venues came to be known as "gun clubs" which functioned more as social functions than shooting factories. Today's Gun Club has been in business since 1954 and still meets every other year onJuly 4th (the date of America's Independence). There are currently over 100 members who participate in all kinds of events; ranging from Trap shoots to skeet matches!

As Californians started moving out into other states, they brought their firearms with them and shootings increased throughout the 1990s until finally culminating with this year’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

This gave rise to the idea of target practice ranges as we know them today. It wasn’t until 1897 that rifles became able to fire rounds per minute, which made it possible for people to compete in matches against other individuals or groups of people. In 1990, following complaints from residents about increasing traffic and pollution in their city center, Mayor DickSCalvert designatedSanLuis as an " Urban Designated Neighborhood." This designation allowed for more mixed-use development within its boundaries and helped promote civic participation within the community. In 2002, voters passed a ballot measure making it an official City charter goal to preserve and restore historic buildings within its borders. Today, San Luis is still a struggling community plagued by poverty and crime; however, it has made great strides over the past few decades in terms of civic engagement and progressivism. Its rich history makes it an important part of Arizona's history landscape – something that should be celebrated not just through preservation efforts but also through increased economic opportunity for all citizens.
The land that is now San Luis became part of the United States in 1912 when it was purchased from the Apache nation.
