The area around San Luis was first inhabited by the Pima people. The Spanish colonized the area in 1769, and named it San Manuel de Lujan. In 1828, Mexico ceded the land to Arizona Territory, and in 1834, the name change became Tucson. Tucson was founded on December 6 of that year by James Wetherbee and Mariano Vallejo. The town was originally called Nogales because of a nearby river called Nogales Creek. In 1888, during the Mexican Revolution, General Antonio Lopez Bonilla chose Tucson as his provisional capital after he helped overthrow Mexican president Agustín Martinez y Arellano.
