San Luis is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is adjacent to Apache Junction and has an area of only 0.5 square miles. The first European to visit San Luis was Father Manuel García de la Encinas in 1821. Today, there are two churches located in San Luis: one built by Father Martinez y Sánchez himself, and another constructed by missionaries under Mexican rule during what is known as The Great Arizona Mission Period (1860-1912). During World War II, many people from San Luis worked on military ranches that were used for testing new weapons before they were mass produced overseas. During the war years many residents also served in the U.S.-Mexican Border Patrol as part of Operation Highjump . In 1941 , after more than 25 years of service with no substantive retirement benefits given them, most members of the Patrol's initial waves retired at age 70 or older due to health reasons unrelated to service; over time however some have continued their service into their eighties The post-World War II era has seen significant growth within San Luis since it became an incorporated municipality in 1984; today there are over 200 citizens registered with local government services including schools, libraries, fire departments, law enforcement services and more!
