In the late 1800s, San Luis was a small community in Arizona. It was a garrison town for the US military and as such, it had a large number of firearms. Gunowners in San Luis enjoyed their firearms and wore them often to show off their collection. Some of these firearms were even used in local shootouts and law enforcement events. The discovery of petroleum in Arizona during the 1920s led to an increase in oil exploration and production in the area, including San Luis. In 1853, Don José García de la Garza led an expedition from the small town of San Luis, Sonora to explore the new world. He discovered what is now Arizona and named it after himself. The area that now includes San Luis was mostly sandstone until a group of miners discovered coal in 1881. The mining industry gave birth to the towns of Tombstone, Prescott and Page as well as the larger city of Phoenix. Today, most people in San Luis are descendants of those who first arrived here over 100 years ago. The history of San Luis goes back many years before President George Washington established Fort Yuma on the site today. A post office called Pima was established in 1847 and served alluvial goldfields east and north of Tucson until 1863 when a post office was built at Geary Creek, about 8 miles east of downtownSan Luis. Goldmining operations began along Geary Creek in 1881 but soon ceased due to low grades and competition from other mines. Development didn’t begin until after World War II when water supplies became available for irrigation around Phoenix and agriculture took off with cattle, wheat, cotton and other crops becoming dominant. The San Luis Valley is a valley in western Arizona that straddles the Colorado River. It was formed by the folding and faulting of the Rocky Mountains and is now part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The valley was originally inhabited by the Kaibab People, who lived near what is now known as Tombstone. In 1864, Mexico gained control over Arizona and renamed it after San Luis Potosi, a city in southern Mexico. The area around present-day Tucson became part of California during the Mexican-American War. The population of Tucson grew rapidly after statehood, reaching 1 million by 1912. From 1924 to 1966, San Luis Valley was considered part of Phoenix metropolitan area. In 2006, it was inserted into the jurisdiction of Scottsdale County, Arizona. The history ofSan Luis Valley began with its namesake: SanLuis Potosi, a small town located on the banks of the Colorado River in southern Mexico at present-day Tombstone. As Californios poured into Mexico during 1846–48 to fight for independence from Spain, they brought their cattle and crops back to northernMexico City; this stimulated an increase in ranching activity along the upper Colorado River watersheds northward to Apache Junction (now Phoenix) and southward to El Paso County (now Tuscon). In 1864 when Mexican America reached its territorial peak under General Santa Anna following his successful coup d’état against President Joaquín López de Santa Anna on December 12th 1861,[1] he decided upon dividing Arizonanomeny between himself and his friend Ulysses S Grant—the first American general ever appointed governor general of all three United States territories acquired from Mexico (New Mexico Territory; Arizona Territory; Tejas Province).[2] Grant's decision effectively divided southeasternArizona among Ulysses S Grant's two successors: Benjamin Harrison[3] and Millard Fillmore.[4] However because there were no federal roads or trails through these rugged regions remote from major population centers like Denver or Sacramento—nor did anyone want them—large numbers of settlers arrived primarily via Stagecoach routes established along wagon trains headed east out of Dodge City (later Independence), including entry points such as Fountain Hills (near Phoenix) across Mogollon Rim country then open grasslands watered only by intermittent rainfall during summer months due to high mountains above;[5][6][7][8] beyond which stretched harsh geography characterized by steep cliffs down Toole Mesa canyon walls on one side sixty feet deep where water seeps slowly under sandstone soils at bottoms before draining away through narrow gullies called “canyon gorges” onto irrigated valleys below [9][10], making what today would be termed “backcountry” much more like today's Front Range areas west/northwest OF Scottsdale AZ? These people were still living amongst other aboriginal peoples when white settlement started although some changes took place such as intermarriage with Pima Indians beginning about 1840 AD so that eventually most children born here would grow up Navajo/Apache while others might become Anglo but most likely retain their Navajoland cultural identity until death
On July 29, 1912, San Luis was incorporated as a town. It became a full-fledged city on January 8, 1937. The population of the town totaled about 2,000 in 1881 and grew to more than 10,000 by 1911. The first post office opened in San Luis on October 6, 1881.
