In 1916, San Luis was the site of a shootout between two groups of Mexican bandits and federal forces. The shootout resulted in the death of six people, including three members of the United States Cavalry. In 1934, two brothers named George and Harry Holmberg opened a Guns & Ammo store in San Luis. In 1945, San Luis was renamed to Independence because of its role as an unofficial gateway to Arizona during the Gadsden Purchase. In 1951, Holmberg's son Harry passed away; his son-in-law Donny took over ownership of the store. Donny died in 1984, leaving behind a legacy of continued firearm sales and support within the town. In 1997, The Gun Shop moved from its original location on Main Street into what is now their current store building on East Capitol Avenue (just north of University Boulevard).

Prescott was chosen as its capital because it had been an important trading center on both sides of the Rio Grande prior to Mexican rule.
