The name is derived from the word “San” meaning “Church” and “Luis” meaning “place.” The original population of San Luis was only a dozen people, but it quickly grew to over 100. Over time, there were several schools and churches in the town, as well as a cotton gin, grocery store, post office, and other businesses. In the early 1920s, the military during World War I stationed troops in San Luis for training purposes. This led to the development of a small army community that soon became known as “the garrison town.” By 1925, San Luis had become an incorporated municipality with its own government and courts. In 1930, when Arizona joined what was then called United States vietnam (1939), San Luis became one of nine towns located within Vietnam. Although many residents withdrew their support for the war due to its duration and brutality, some continue to live here today because they feel that their ancestors made this choice willingly and gladly. Today, San Luis is a small community with a tight-knit culture that remains rooted in Spanish/Mexican values despite living in one of America's most diverse cities. The town has three main streets: Calle del Escorial (Church Street), Avenida de la Constitución ( Constitution Avenue), and Paseo de la Reforma (Reform Road). Many businesses still use these namesakes as their mailing addresses - such as La Hacienda Coffee & Donuts on Avenida de la Constitución or El Centro at Paseo de la Reforma - because it has been considered part ofSanLuis since before it even incorporated as a municipality!
