San Luis, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit San Luis were Father Francisco Rodriguez and his small group of friars from New Spain on their way to survey the lands around Tucson in 1769. A Mormon settlement was established in 1847 by Brigham Young and others who had trekked overland from Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1852 San Luis became a station on the Phoenix and Tucson Railway. In 1912 two brothers—John Fenton and Harry Emerson Fenton—founded what would become Pinnacle Peak Brewing Company in honor of their father's favorite drink: pilsner brewed with hops grown near Phoenix. John Fenton also founded Anadarko Petroleum Company which produced natural gas until it merged with Chesapeake Energy Corporation in 1999. The company name has been changed several times including Apache Pipe Line Inc., Apache Exploration Company LP, Navajo Pipeline Co., Apache Natural Gas Production Partnership LLC and finally Pinnacle Peak Energy Partners LP since its inception.. A post office was established at San Luis in 1907, and operated for twenty-four years before being discontinued in 1932. In 1934 an irrigation project led to the erection of a new courthouse which became home to the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity later that year; this building still stands today as one of downtown San Luis' many historic landmarks! In 1940 nearby Sells City annexed San Luis so that it could join Sells Municipal Utility District #1 (SMUD). However territorial politics prevented full incorporation until 1957 when SMUD #2 merged into SMUD #1 along with all other municipal properties within Pima County! On October 14th 1906 an earthquake hit southern Mexico killing more than sixty people primarily due to damage done to churches!
The town of San Luis was founded in 1867 by citizens of the small community of Cochiti. The first post office was established in San Luis on November 10, 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 20, 1912. The townspeople donated the land for a new depot which was built at what is now corner of Pecos and Mohawk Streets. By 1870, San Luis had a population of twenty-one residents. In 1875, General James Buchanan ordered all troops out of Mexico and the Mexican government began to collapse. As result, many people from Mexico who were living in Arizona decided to move to the United States. Many businesses were closed down as a result and there wasn't enough work available for American citizens in California so they started moving into Arizona too. In 1880, San Luis had a population of seventy-two residents and two churches; one Baptist and one Methodist. In 1924, Tucson became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council; however, San Luis continued to be part of Tucson until 1990 when it merged with neighbouring Otay Mesa into one municipality known today as Tucson City Park District
