The name Sahuarita comes from the Lipan Apache word "sahava" meaning "to dawn." The city was named after Captain Fernando de la Hoz y Durán who discovered it while exploring the area in 1881. Sahuarita has a rich history dating back to 1912 when it was founded by Spanish-American War veterans José María Romero and Manuel Cruz. They named their new town for General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had been captured and held at Fort Yuma during the Mexican-American War. In 1915, Sahuarita became a municipio ( municipality) under Mexican rule and functioned as an agricultural center until its independence from Mexico in 1912. In 1916, Pedro Avila Rivera became director of public works in Tucson and ordered that all new towns be named after American heroes or martyrs such as George Washington, James Kenedy or John F Kennedy. On November 20th 1912 Rafael Vargas Coconino donated land to Sahuarita for its founding which included two blocks of east side streets on what is now Pima Avenue between East Second Street and East Third Street. This donation made Sahuarita one of only five municipalities founded by Vargas Coconino in Arizona that still exists today with a population over 40,000 residents! On April 12th 1920 Santiago García took office as Mayor of Tucson after being elected to that position by popular vote against incumbent Municipal President Ricardo Flores Magón. García would later become Governor of Arizona twice before his death in 1944 leaving office on December 8th with a minority government following his death which left power vacuumes within the municipal government which allowed crime to increase especially around downtown areas where organized gangs operated freely! From 1942-1945 there were three mayorships with Jorge Castilla serving consecutively from 1942-1945 each winning with more than 50% support according to unofficial results prior to his retirement due to health problems; however he would not be able to serve consecutive terms since state law specified no more than two consecutive terms for mayors! Garcia’s successor Federico Peña Nieto served four years before becoming governor himself succeeding Miriam Defensor Sanchez who had also been mayor during Garcia’s incumbency but resigned due to term limits set forth by then Governor Morris Udall! García’s widow Dolores Custodio took over governorship until her death suddenly making her first female mayor effective January 1st 2019! In 1951 Juan Enrique Mora became mayor upon Morales' sudden resignation due To ill health which caused him intense personal rivalries within his own party later leading him into exile; he returned home two years later but died again soon afterwards producing another vacancy allowing another election resulting in Peña Nieto's victory Regenerando el Estado Azteca para los Niños!' However this claim is currently disputed by various sources including some featuring original election results published decades ago!! !
