Sahuarita, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 5,379 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is located on the southern border of Phoenix within Maricopa County. The name "Sahuarita" means "place where we found fruit" in Nahuatl language. The first European to visit this region was Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1542. He named it after Huahua (now Huaxtla), a small village on the Mexican-American border east of San Diego which he visited while travelling through that region looking for new land to explore. In 1844, Mormon pioneers discovered silver and gold here and founded Sahuarita Valley as an agricultural center with mills and mines until Comanche bands forced them out in 1868. In 1870 Sahuarita became a Navajo Nation town when Apache Chief Cochise relinquished his claim to parts of what are now Pinal and Maricopa counties to the Navajo people. The settlement declined during World War I because most men were drafted into military service or sent away to fight in Europe; however, by 1919 Sahuarita had grown sufficiently large for a post office and began expanding its services as a bedroom community for Phoenix suburbanites who could no longer live near their jobs in downtown Phoenix. During World War II many Japanese Americans Interned at Wickenburg Army Camp lived here before being released into Tucson area circa 1945; however much controversy surrounds whether or not they truly left voluntarily or were forcibly moved without notice or choice by then Commander-in-Chief General George Custer's order given during the event known as march from Wickenburg to Tucson ultimately leading up to Battle of Santa Cruz Mountain where over 100 Japanese American boys lost their lives including some who may have beenTransferrin
