Sahuarita, Arizona is a small town in the United States of America about an hour drive from Tucson. It has a rich history dating back to the 1880s when miners mined silver and other minerals here. Today, Sahuarita is home to several thousand residents and businesses, including two major optical companies, Philips and Bayer Schering AG. “The optical industry has grown rapidly in Sahuarita over the past decade” states The Optical Quarterly magazine (Vol. XXXIII No. 2), “and there are few places more poised for growth than this sleepy corner of Arizona” (Fischer et al 2006). Philips was founded in 1885 by two American engineers working at the British company Thomson-Houston. In 1925 they merged with German optical equipment manufacturer Elektronische Kameras Gesellschaft mbH to form Philips Corporation (PHILIPS). At that time Philips was one of biggest producers of consumer electronics products in Europe and was responsible for producing such famous brands as VCRs, radios, TVs and DVD players. In 2003 PHILIPS sold its consumer electronics division to Thomson Reuters for £2 billion ($3.4 billion) making it one of the world’s largest technology companies. Bayer Schering AG was founded in 1865 by Johann Friedrich Bayer who developed methods for manufacturing spectacles which he patented in 1875. The company became known for manufacture of lenses, spectacles, contact lens materials and medical devices until it merged with Akzo Nobel NV in 1998 to form Bayer Schering Plc (BAYER). Since then Bayer Schering has been one of the leading suppliers of optics products both inside and outside the European Union with sales totaling around EUR 10 billion ($12 billion) last year alone (Goudreau et al 2018). Sahuarita, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Sahuarita" means "place where the sun sets." The first Europeans to visit Sahuarita were Spanish soldiers in 1821 on their way to warfare against Apache Indians and they named the site San Xavier de la Guadalupe because of a Catholic mission located there. Mexican settlers also called the place San Xavier de la Guadalupe because of its location near what is now downtown Sahuarita. In 1848, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Campo Naranjo north of present-day Sahuarita on his march from Tucson to Gila River Valley during his campaign against Mexican forces commanded by Colón and Agustín Carrillo. The camp was used as an encampment for Ulysses S. Grant's military forces marching into Mexico City during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). American soldiers burned down Campo Naranjo in 1868 during a skirmish with Mexicans while supplies were being transported through the valley to Fort Stanton on nearby Catalina Mountain. In 1875, gold was discovered at Butte Creek within miles of Sahuarita and local miners began operating a small mill known as Waddell & Stephens until 1902 when quartzmining operations became available in nearby Tombstone proper which led to increased demand for water power for mills in southern Arizona so mining companies built dams across Butte Creek Delta creating large lakes that supplied water to towns like Tempe and Scottsdale until those communities diverted most or all of their water supply into urban areas by 1960s. With new found land becoming available following World War II development followed: housing developments (the so-called "Gold Rush"), shopping malls (including one built by Sears), strip malls and industrial parks soon replaced agriculture as primary industry in what had been an agricultural community before Gold Rush days. Today it still boasts a strong farming tradition with cattle raising being one major industry but also offers some impressive architecture including Collegiate Gothic Revival era buildings dating back to 1886 One such building is Villa Madera which overlooks Saguaro National Park

The City Council approved plans for a new downtown shopping mall in 1978, but it never took off and closed down in 1990. In 1994–95 Sahuarita hosted the world's first Desertdisplay Expo which showcased Americana items from around the world at an event that drew more than 150 attendees from 10 countries. The original Exposition Hall remains standing today as a museum and art gallery named "The Art of Isidore Sahuarita". Today, much of what made Sahuarita so vibrant has passed away; however, there are still many reminders of its history including local farmers markets held every Saturday morning since 2007 and numerous museums available for visits such as the Museum of Indian Arts & Sciences or the Heard Museum (now known as Phoenix Museum of Modern Art).
The city of Sahuarita, Arizona was founded in 1875 by the Pima and Maricopa Indians. The first settler in what is now Sahuarita was James Skinner. In 1912, the town became a part of Scottsdale when that city was created from parts of Pinal County and Apache County.
