In 1912, developer Harry Waddell built his first home in what is now Sahuarita and named it after his rancho. From 1917 to 1922, he also operated a cattle ranch adjoining Sahuarita Rancho. In 1905–6, Waddell laid out a new town on land that he had purchased east of present-day Sahuarita Village. He contracted with architect Haddon Pease to design a two-story white adobe courthouse and jail which were dedicated on November 17, 1906.Pease's design features intricate ceramic tilework and limestone quoins throughout the building envelope; both exterior walls are lined with this type of tilework. Although several other towns were developed in Sahuarita during the 1910s including Barrett (1912), Spanish Fork (1916), El Mirage (1920) and Loop City (1925), none attained as much notoriety as Saguaro Valley did during its heyday before World War II when it served as an important military post for monitoring troops entering or leaving Phoenix through southern Arizona Territory

The area had been inhabited for over 10,000 years and the first European to set foot in what is now Sahuarita was Spanish conquistador Juan de la Fuente in 1540. In 1916 Sahuarita became a city when it was incorporated as part of Tucson.
