Sahuarita, Arizona is one of the oldest towns in the United States. It was founded in 1867 by Mormons who had traveled from Salt Lake City. The town grew rapidly and by 1901 it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, during World War I Sahuarita was severely bombed and burned by American planes. The damage caused many homes to burn down and as a result the population dropped significantly. In 1925 Sahuarita re-established itself as an incorporated village with a population of around 100 people. However, the town declined further in popularity after World War II until it regained some stability in the 1960s when it became an agricultural center for nearby Phoenix.
