The name "Sahurita" means "place of the saguaro" in the Yuma Apache language and refers to an Apaches' hunting ground located near present-day Sahuarita on the Gila River. The first European to visit Sahurita was American Captain John Dutton on July 8, 1820 while exploring what is now northern Tucson Valley. He named the area Sahurita after his friend and fellow sailor Francisco Vasquez de Ayala who had accompanied him when he explored this area in 1795. In 1851 Mexican Colonel Antonio López de Santa Anna founded a military fort at present-day Sahurita following his victory over Ulysses S Grant's army during the Mexican–American War. In 1873 Osborn Mining Company purchased land east of Sahurita from Mexicans for $1 per acre with intentions of developing it as a silvermining district. However, because of heavy rains that year and consequent flooding, development never began and no silver was found until 1935 when underground workings were finally discovered at nearby Nogales Lake under the guidance of local prospector Alonzo Higbee who named one end of Nogales Lake San Pedro Creek after General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit which had destroyed many villages along the Gila River during its campaign against Apache warriors early that year. In 1954 general George Ayerleck established Fort Huachuca (later Phoenix Army Airfield) adjacent to Nogales Lake just north of today's town limits in order to support military activities related to Operation Weehawken which were then ongoing in southwest Arizona as part of United States Army forces supportingOperation Navajo thrust into Mexico City en route to overthrow dictator Porfirio Diaz On February 15, 1957 control over all USAAF activity within Spanish airspace passed from USAAF command to Mexican authorities effective February 25th when Communist Chinese pilots flying an unloaded XB-40 bomber became airborne over Monterrey having mistakenly believed they were bombing their home city of Beijing instead which led them to flyPNO missions against targets inside Mexico City prior their return trip back home on March 4th only days before President Eisenhower announced plans for Operation Crossroads involving three simultaneous air campaigns against Cuba beginning on April 6th .
