Sahuarita, Arizona is a small town located in Maricopa County, Arizona. The population was 1,321 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of the Saguaro National Monument and has been known as the "oldest continuously inhabited settlement" in Arizona. The first European to sight Sahuarita was Spanish conquistador Juan Rodriguez de Mendoza on September 20, 1540 while exploring what is now Phoenix. He named it San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint, and built a military fort there in 1546-47. Mexican Mission Santa Cruz erected its church here in 1769-70 under Jesuit auspices. After Mexico's secularization in 1821, this became part of US territory until it was acquired by Mexico in 1848 as part of Alta California during the Mexican-American War. In 1861, when Territorial Officer Tom Sherman divided Arizona into territorial counties based on congressional districts (the first county sections were drawn up prior to statehood), Sahuarita lay within District 3 (Maricopa County). On December 12th 1861, by order of Governor John Hancey, all white settlers east of 14 miles west of downtown were ordered out and burned as they refused to leave their homes without compensation or warning; this included all men over 21 years old living west of that line! As a result of these events and others following with increased frequency throughout 1862 due to Apache raids into westernArizona Territory (), many men decided to emigrate eastward instead than stay put - including some who had settled here originally as farmers/ ranch hands (). Most notably among these early departureees was Elisha Lawrence who came from Illinois via El Paso on horseback “to build a new home for himself and his family” (). He arrived at Sahuarita on October 10th 1864 aboard USS Mohawk under Lieutenant Commander Wm Gosset with his wife (and future Mrs. Lawrence) Anna Maria Kincaid blessing him before takeoff: “Here comes our ordained man...of Illinois’s Prairie Home Companion fame!” (). For more than 40 years he labored tirelessly at various ranching operations around Tucson before becoming one of Tucson’s most successful entrepreneurs – an important figure in postwar entrepreneurial growth throughout southern AZ ().
Sahuarita was founded in 1876 by Kari and John W. Smith. It is the oldest town in Arizona and has a population of over 10,000 people today. The town was named for the Sahuarita Mountains, which are located to the east of the town. The first post office was established in Sahuarita in 1876. In 1912, Sahuarita became an incorporated municipality.
