In 1907, the U.S. Army built a military airfield called Camp Bowie here which served as an artillery range and later became home to several thousand American troops during World War I and World War II. The airfield was closed in 1945 and became a private ranch until it was donated to the Apache County government in 1963. Today, Camp Bowie marks one of Sahuarita's most notable historic sites with its reconstructed barracks from 1907-1915 and associated Hangar A2 which housed UH-1 Huey helicopters during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 In addition to its role as an important stop on Route 66, Sahuarita also hosts several cultural festivals each year including Folklife Festival (March), Western Cowboy & Rider Festival (October), Fiesta del Libro Indian Product Showcase (November), arts & crafts show (December) and Christmas parade (January). Located less than 1 mile from downtown Sahuarita is shopping center that includes boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, banks etc., along with numerous other services such as health club, library/museum etc.. There are also three golf courses within walking distance: Dobson Golf Course off US 95 near junction with AZ 87; Pinehurst Golf Course just outside town limits east of I-8 Exit 172; Colonial Country Club about 2 miles northeast of town limits off US 95 between exits 163 and 164

After finding an area that fit their needs and desires for land east of Tucson Mountain Pass - they named their new settlement "Sahuarita." The town's growth began quickly due to its location and access to water resources which made it an ideal place to settle down and start a new life. From 1904 until 1914, Sahuarita experienced some very active times as it grew steadily thanks to both government investment as well as business ventures led by local entrepreneurs such as Wm Hurlbut Jr., Jens Olsen & Co., Harry Ayer Company & Brother Wm Hurlbut Sr.'s grocery store (later known as Walmart). Thanks also to WWI efforts by US forces stationed at Tucson Mountain Pass - many businesses closed down due to wartime restrictions on commerce but these did not stop Saguaro City from becoming one of the most vibrant towns on the Mexican border during this time period! Additionally, during prohibition years (1920-1933), many residents turned their skills towards agriculture instead of crime or smuggling because there were no other opportunities available outside those options at that time! In addition to its booming economy –Saguaro City also saw rapid population growth thanks largely to social services offered through organizations like Catholic Charities USA which started operations here back in 1905! This service helped lowincome citizens obtain food stamps and other forms of assistance so they could purchase basics like housing and clothing without havingto worry about money troubles; something that still persists today! In 1963 – following enactment into law by President John F Kennedy –Saguaro City erupted into colorful celebrations when Mayor Raymundo Martinez announced he would be appointing his granddaughter Bernadette Smith “Mayor Goddess” effective immediately! At just 24 years old – Bernadette had already accomplished more than any other municipal official ever before her while serving hometownizens through her public office!!
