Sahuarita, Arizona is a small town located in Cochise County, Arizona. The population of Sahuarita was 4,813 as of the 2010 census. The community is named after an Apache Chief who fought against the United States during the Mexican-American War. The city was founded in 1899 by John Witherspoon and his wife Jennie Price. The name “Sahuarita” comes from two words: “sahúara” meaning “a place where there are apple trees” and “háracha” meaning “hill or mountain top.” In 1875, Spanish explorer Pascual Escobar visited what is now Sahuarita Valley and noted that there were apple trees on the hilltop. After Escobar's visit, a group of ranchers started to grow apples here and naming the valley "Sahuarita." In 1899, Mr. Witherspoon founded Sahuarita City with his wife Jennie Price as its first mayor The modern day city of Sahuarita was boomtown during its early years thanks to several factors: 1) ranching activity brought people and goods to town; 2) gold discovery in Cochise County boosted local businesses; 3) U.S.-Mexican War hostilities led to increased traffic on the nearby highway; 4) tourism became an important factor in later years; The growth of the city slowed down after World War II due to competition from other towns in Cochise County; however, it has experienced a recent resurgence with development booming around downtown areas such as University Park/Old Town Core District and Northwest Annexes since 2000 Today, Sahuarita City has 725 residents (2010 Census), making it one of Phoenix's fastest-growing communities .

Sahuarita, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first white man to set foot in what is now Sahuarita was José María de Anaya on March 4, 1847. He was on his way from Tucson to Yuma when he spotted a possible route across the Sonoran Desert for wagon trains and decided to explore it further. On July 5, 1847 Anaya founded Sahuarita on land that had been granted him by President Tomás Arias Bagley as part of the Apache removal campaign of 1846-48. In 1886 US Forest Service ranger George Ahern discovered uranium mining claims in what is now Sahuarita Township and took possession of them; however no commercial mining began until 1928 when control passed to the Republic National Bank of Phoenix through their subsidiary Republic Uranium Development Company (RUDCO). Mining continued until 1978 when all but one small mine were closed due to environmental concerns caused by nearby black Mesa Sulphur Springs copper mine and its associated operations which used arsenic and other toxic chemicals in their production process. In 1984 Republics parent company First American Corporation merged with Rio Tinto Plc., creating one of the world’s largest metals companies with over $100 billion in assets under management as of September 30, 2018 . As part of this merger several mines including RUDCOs Huachuca Mine and Catalinas proved too hazardous for continuation so they were sold off piecemeal between 1984 and 1998 with some continuing operations while others closed completely or partially due to health concerns including cancerous exposure from underground workings etc.. All mines have since been abandoned save for two open-pit mines operated by Rio Tinto still producing uranium ore today . In addition there are numerous short-term surface leases held by various parties who hope to revive/extract coal or oil from these lands although none have indicated any immediate plans ..
