In 1935 Don Emilio Castilla donated land near present-day Sahuarita to establish a shopping center and agricultural fair called Casa Blanca y Belleza (House White and Beauty). The fair was moved to its current location in 1951 when part of Tucson's western suburban belt was annexed into Phoenix. The town had 1,026 residents as of 2010 according to the United States Census Bureau estimate; however this number may have increased since then due to commuting or other reasons. Sahuarita, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and lies adjacent to Scottsdale, the largest city in Arizona. The Sahuarita Canyon National Recreation Area is located within the town limits. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sahuarita were Spanish priests on their way from Tucson to Prescott in 1769. They named the canyon San Xavier de los Arcos after St. Xavier's Chapel east of Tucson. Sahuarita was founded by Mexicans who had come overland from Mexico City in 1854 as workers for Jepson Mining Company led by George Bigham and Grosvenor Washburne. After mining ceased operations in 1868, many of these men returned home and started families here. In 1872, they laid out a townsite which they called "Atascosa". The name may have been derived from Atascosa Creek which flows through town today. In 1886, when it became a military post under Major General Antonio López de Santa Anna Mexican forces killed Waco Kidnappers John Wesley Powell and David Hance near San Pedro Valley while hunting for Apache chiefs Geronimo and Black Hawk among other suspects during his campaign against the Apache people known as la Guerra del Colorado (the Colorado War). This event inspired American conservationist Edward Condon to found Northern Arizona Conservation Commission here in 1907 with land donated by ranchers Alvord Cooke and Charles Merrill Hereford along Withy Gulch just south of present day Sahuarita Mesa inside present day Pinal County line on October 12th 1907.(See also: History of Sedona) Afterwards several small towns slowly grew up around it until there were more than 100 residents here by 1920 including stores such as The Saguaro News & Journal (founded 1915), Doña Ana newspapers El Nuevo Herald & El País (1922-1927), commercial buildings like Woolworths grocery store built 1924-1925(now pantomime theater) as well as new homes being erected like Holy Cross Catholic Church 1928-1929(now apparent museum), Masonic Temple 1929-1930(now school), Bank Of America building constructed 1935- 1936(now office building) before World War II brought an influx into bomber planes manufacturing Lockheed Constellation planes at nearby Edwards Air Force Base 1944 until production stopped 1945 because of fuel rationing following war victory
