Queen Creek is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. It is the county seat of Pima County. The population was 9,031 at the 2010 census. Queen Creek was founded in 1867 as a town on the east bank of the Colorado River. It was named for Queen Victoria of England. In response settlers started moving into Queen Creek from all over southern Arizona including Tucson starting in 1865 when Territorial Governor Don Carlos Richardson authorized 8 families from Apache Junction southward along what would become US 441 (now I-10) under contract with local ranchers led by Captain John Wesley Powell who explored those routes during his 1860 explorations through what is now Arizona Territory - part Two Hundred Forty Five miles west of Scottsdale on behalf of US President Andrew Johnson! Queen Creek, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Queen Creek was founded by Mormons in 1885 on the site of what is now known as Queen Creek Village. The name "Queen" comes from a creek that flows through the area and once emptied into the Gila River near present-day Phoenix. In 1886, George Vancouver led an expedition up Queen Creek to find its source. He found it to be a tributary of the Gila River and named it after his British predecessor, Prince Alexander Cochrane's party who first discovered its existence in 1776. In 1887, Brigham Young organized a group of Mormon pioneers who traveled down Queen Creek and established Fort Harker east of present day Queen Creek Village on October 15th. They named their settlement Zion Valley after Mount Zion in Palestine which they had seen while travelling there on their way to Utah Territory conquest in 1847 (see Mormon Trail). The first post office was established in Queensville on November 4th, 1888; however, it did not open until February 22nd 1890 because no mail could be delivered from Tempe due to strikes by Central Pacific Railway workersqvivt at that time over pay grievances related to extended work hours during construction of the Tempe–Phoenix Railwayqvwitt . The first store opened in Queensville was a grocery store operated by Sidney Aiken and his brother-in-law Wm Snedden which sold groceries and refreshments for passengers travelling between Phoenix and Tucson along the tempe corridor (the old route today known as I-10). Queen Creek was founded in 1885 by the Southern Arizona Mining and Navigation Company. The company mined gold and silver in Queen Creek, then shipped the ore out to Tucson for processing. In 1907, the Mexican government granted a land concession to ranchers in Queen Creek Rancho San Jacinto. This led to increased mining activity in the area, which caused environmental problems. In 1916, Pope XVIII assigned responsibility for Lake Havasu National Park to the United States Department of Agriculture. As a result of this decision, mining companies stopped operations in Queen Creek and other nearby areas.
