But over time, Queen Creek has grown to become one of the most populous towns in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Queen Creek is located along the banks of the Salt River on the east side of Phoenix. The town was named for Queen Charlotte, Duchess of Kent and Strathearn, who donated land to make it a township. The first Post Office opened in 1870. Queen Creek's population rapidly grew after Latino immigrants arrived in large numbers in the early 1900s. By 1920, Queen Creek had reached 1,000 residents and was included within Phoenix city limits. The late 1800s were difficult for many Arizonans as World War I created an economic depression that affected all sectors of society. In 1919, Kingman rancher Ignacio Martinez organized a group to resist federal government restrictions on cattle grazing near Apache Pass which would have required heavy management from state officials and private interests alike. This resistance led to Martinez' death at age 36 when he was fatally shot by federal agents during an illegal roundup; this event is also known as "the Apache Shoot." In response to this challenge to government authority, local militia groups formed under the leadership of Captain Harry Fenton began planning an uprising against their occupiers in early 1920; however, these plans fell apart due to lack of funding and coordination among various participants. Queen Creek is a small town in Arizona, located about 25 miles north of Tucson. The name commemorates the Queen of England who, in 1847, married Pahrump's first settler, John Cooke. Queen Creek was founded in 1869 by Frank H. Eaton and C.F. Carlson as a ranching community on the banks of the Virgin River. The town grew rapidly after the 1906 Apache raid that killed more than 100 people and destroyed most of the village. In 1912 Queen Creek became an incorporated municipality and continued to grow until it had over 2,000 residents by 1970.
