In 1876 King set up a post office at what is now downtown Queen Creek; this initial effort failed because few people wanted to sent mail through rapids on the Gila River! In 1881 King established another post office in what is now Goodyear Mesa; this second attempt fared better because people realized that queen creek would be an important transportation hub! In 1886 Queen leased land north of downtown fromthe Arizona Land Company for $1 per acre (this lease lasted until 1912).
