Queen Creek was founded in 1875 by Mormons who came from Utah to homestead in what is now Coconino County. The first post office at Queen Creek was established on November 13, 1875. The name of the post office was changed to Queen Creek on October 1, 1876. In 1907, Queen Creek became an incorporated village and remained so until 1959 when it became a city under the jurisdiction of Phoenix. On December 3, 1959 Queen Creek had a population of 54 people and adopted its current name which is based off the creek's namesake: "Queen" being "the most beautiful watercourse south of Denver." Queen Creek is home to several shopping malls including Scotts Valley Mall and Mountain View Shopping Center. In addition there are several restaurants such as Joe's Pizza and Chipotle Mexican Grill along with numerous small businesses that contribute to the local economy. One aspect that has always been important to inhabitants of this town is their love for outdoor activities such as climbing mountains or fishing in the creek itself; these have become increasingly popular due to climate change which has made desert summers more unpredictable than they used to be.
