Queen Creek was first settled in 1877 by Hennepin County settlers who named it for their chief queen, or "queen" of the Tipi Timpahtat people. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to sheep and cattle ranching operations and mineral discoveries in nearby Apache Valley. In 1912 Queen Creek became a city when it incorporated as a result of an act of Congress. The city's main industry until World War II was agriculture, with crops such as wheat, corn, cotton, and sorghum grown on some 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of agricultural land that had been leased from Mesa Verde Coal Company since 1907. After the war local industries included aircraft manufacturing and distribution plants built by Republic Aircraft Corporation; banana Processing Works Inc., which processed bananas for early-20th century grocery stores; and Steelworkers' Local 711 Printing Shop Inc., which produced steel molds for federal munitions plants across North America. During the 1970s Queen Creek experienced rapid growth as a result of new mining and engineering projects including underground water storage facilities, heavy-lift logging equipment manufacturer Budd Logistics Group's facility; Mohawk Resources Corp.'s Copper Canyon mine; Pima County's largest open-pit copper mine (the Donnell Mines);[1] and Tempe Municipal Airport opened in 1971.[2] However these developments coincided withPhoenix's overall decline as a bedroom community after state funding cuts led to declines in economic activity throughout much of Arizona during the early 21st century.
