In addition, many African Americans moved into Phoenix during this time period to work on new construction projects or as servants in white households. As Phoenix grew older and more diverse than ever before, so too did its social organizations; among these were black churches which flourished during this time period. Queen Creek experienced rapid growth following World War II; by 1946 it had become one of Arizona's most populous municipalities with over 100,000 residents. However, despite its growing population and economic stability,Queen Creek experienced some controversy both within and outside of its community due to issues such as race relations and crime rates. During this era there also emerged a movement towards self-government within Queen Creek's municipal government; however progress stalled due to divided opposition from ethnic minority groups who felt they were not being treated fairly by the majority white population. This issue remains unresolved today but has served as a catalyst for renewed activism within Queens Cleaverly Community Development Corporation (QCDC) which manages much of QCDC's infrastructure including water resources management and waste disposal systems
