Queen Creek is located on the eastern edge of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first place that European explorers found in what is now Pinal County was Chiricahua Apache Reservation. In 1849, Spanish general Antonio López de Santa Anna established Presidio La Hacienda de las Animas (Peak Presidio) along theenablement of his expedition to quash any Indian resistance to Mexican rule. Santa Anna's expedition passed through Queen Creek in May 1849 and he named it after José María Queena, niece of Don Bernardo Yorba y Quiñones and sister-in-law of Agustín Fierro y Costilla. In 1851 Captain John Wesley Powell discovered Gold Rush country in present-day Arizona when he led an exploration party from Fort McDowell intophoenix valley searching for a route to California via Arizonan goldfields. On July 24,1852 Powell's group camped north of present day Queen Creek on the banks of the Verde River near its mouth about northwest of Scottsdale. Three days later they abandoned their search for gold and returned toFort McDowell under heavy pioneer fire as Indians attacked them from ambush east ofthe river bank just south of today's Scottsdale city limits. After World War II, many residents left for different reasons such as labor shortages due to increased mining activity in Arizona. Many others moved into what is now Phoenix because rents were much cheaper there than in other cities. As time passed, Queen Creek experienced more economic downturns and low levels of population until it regained its past prosperity around 2010-2015 when housing prices reached record highs and new development began popping up all over town including an office park adjacent to school property which has led to some confusion between Queen Creek proper (the historical core) and that annexed during that time called Queensborough which includes newer developments (and some old buildings) east of School Avenue/but still within city limits? The community's current fortunes are largely thanks to new investment being made near its eastern edge by one developer who plans on creating 10-15 million square feet of mixed use retail space, 250 residential units with underground parking included, 1 million sq ft of commercial space with associated hotel/restaurant/importers space along with parkland surrounding it?
