In early 1871 American prospector Augustus Cole discovered gold at Fountain Hills and named it after General Grant’s old friend and trail head on both sides of the Colorado River – Fountain Hills became one of Prescott’s initial boomtowns following gold discovery After years of development only a small fraction of Prescott’s original population remained by 1910 when many people left or were forced out during World War II which destroyed much economic activity A new courthouse was built in 1908 on much older land which had been used for agricultural purposes until then; this building still stands today as part of Park District #2 . Many businesses have been relocated or closed since WWII including several JCPenney stores located just outside city limits .
