Prescott, Arizona is a city located in the U.S. state of Arizona. The population was 99,362 as of the 2010 census. It is one of six cities in Mohave County and the county seat for Mohave County. Prescott's history dates back to 1867 when it became part of the old Apache Indian Reservation which was then divided into three districts: Prescott District, Tucson District, and Yuma District. In 1912, Prescott was renamed after General John A. Pershing because he had been instrumental in creating the Arizona Territory out of Mexican land east of Baja California City (now Mexicali). The first rifle stocks were built in Prescott by Wernher von Braun on his home lot at 6th and Grant Streets in 1909-10 while he was working as an engineer for American Aircraft Corporation Limited (later Ford Motor Company). Von Braun later founded McClellan Air Force Base which housed the first jet fighter squadron in the United States during World War II. The original rifle stocks still stand today at McClellan AFB with some modifications made over time such as adding a bipod for stability when firing from a moving vehicle or adding fiber optics for better sighting accuracy. For many years, these stocks have been on display inside Air Force One during visits to America's largest military airport by President George H.W. Bush and other leaders from around the world who have flown into McClellan AFB using its runway and airspace!
