In 1896, Prescott became a municipality under Mexico City municipal laws with a population exceeding 100,000 people living within 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) of an official government center or “comarca” boundaries at that time; these boundaries would later be changed to include all but downtown Prescott when Mexico City became an autonomous city in 1912).
