Prescott, Arizona is situated in the Coconino County located east of Phoenix and west of Tucson. The city was founded in 1867 by John C. Frisbie and named after General George Crook who fought in the Mexican-American War. Prescott became a county seat in 1912. From 1915 to 1917, Prescott was the site of World War I armaments testing conducted by the United States Army's Bureau of Gunnery Research. The city also hosted the first international air show held outdoors in America at Thunderbird Field on July 4th, 1924. In 1919, Prescott renamed itself "Phoenix" after American President James K. Polk who had helped found theCity during his time as Governor of Arizona Territory from 1881-1883. The City Councilors for Phoenix and Prescott agreed to merge their governments on November 3rd, 1920 due to lack of government funding for both cities combined which totaled $1 million dollars at that time. The merger was effective January 1st 1921 and resulted in an increase in taxes for both cities which paid off with increased revenues for both City Councils resulting in more funds available to be used for civic purposes within each city such as education, public works projects, infrastructure development etcetera
