It is one of two towns in Scotts Valley County and part of the Prescott-Chandler Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up Prescott was first inhabited by Native Americans. In 1867, Pioneers from Colorado arrived in what is now Prescott to help build a wagon road between Phoenix and Tucson. By 1870, it had become an Indian settlement with over 100 people living there. The name "Prescott" came about when Ulysses S. Grant visited the area and saw a creek called "Prescott's Crossing" located on a bluff overlooking Nowata Creek. He named this stream after General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle near Prescott while leading his brigade during the Mexican American War years earlier. In 1881, Prescott became part of Doña Ana County as its capital under Territorial Authority following Arizona's admission to United States as a state on November 14th, 1912 '. On February 14th 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating Mohave County which included much of present-day Scotts Valley County including most of what is now Prescott '. Mohave County was abolished on February 16th 1927 when it was merged into Apache County . On July 1st 1920s James Waddell founded Whatcom Manufacturing Company with $1 million from his father-in-law Arthur Bliss Perryman . This company manufactured radios, phonographs and other electronic equipment starting up manufacturing operations at their new plant in downtown Plaza City soon afterwards renamed Western Electric Corporation which continues to produce these products today as well as numerous others under various brand names throughout North America
Prescott Arizona was founded in 1912 by the Prescott family. The town was named after General George A. Custer, who died during the War of 1812. In 1912, a post office and school were established in the town, and it initially only served residents of Prescott Valley. By 1916, Prescott had annexed the adjacent towns of Gallup and Tombstone. In 1920, Prescott became an incorporated city.
