Prescott Valley is a small town in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Prescott Valley is located on the east side of the Colorado River, about halfway between Phoenix and Scottsdale. Prescott Valley was founded in 1867 by Dr. James Waddell Prescott and his wife Anna Maria Hillman Prescott as a ranch for cattle and sheep owners near present-day Chandler. In 1886, Prescott Valley became an incorporated town after passage of the Arizona Territory Organic Act. The City Council was first elected in 1912 with Hiram Lodge as mayor; he resigned to become a UPI editor. The area around present-day Prescott was part of this initial settlement and there were few buildings or infrastructure when Captain Hance arrived; he simply set about building himself an adobe ranch house which he named "Hance's Hill". By 1903, however, activity had begun to increase at "Hance's Hill" as miners poured into the region seeking find new goldfields. On December 15th, 1903, two men - John Wesley Hardin and George Anaya - discovered millstones bearing gold worth $2 million from an assay taken at Gold Rush period site Wickenburg (now Yucca City). This discovery led to increased mining activity at "Hance's Hill" and soon enough more people had moved into the area including Drury Copley who named his new company Gadsden Mines after General Andrew Johnson who helped lead America through its greatest crisis during those times: The Mexican-American War (1846-48). The name Gadsden Mines stuck with these early settlers for several reasons: First because it sounded like a geological feature rich in gold; second because it suggested someone with mining experience was running things; finally because it resembled Englishman Sir Henry Lawson's iconic mine logo which featured six green drops dangling from a wreath below some lofty mountainside Consequently many early businesses were called Gadsden Mines: stores such as JW Harriman & Co., Diehl Bros., Laughlin Saw Mills etc.; mills such as Hardin Manufacturing Company; irrigation plants such as Hale Water Works Company etc.; even post office facilities like Post Office Building No 1/Gadsden Mines until 1912 when Phoenix became an incorporated city!
