Prescott Valley, Arizona is a small town located in Apache County, Arizona. The population of Prescott Valley was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Prescott Valley is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is bordered to the north by Glendale and to the east by Scottsdale. To the south it shares borders with Tempe and North Scottsdale. To the west it borders on Apache Junction. The first people to live in Prescott Valley arrived around 1867 when John Wesley Powell and his party explored what is now Apache County looking for a route through which they could travel to California. They found many deposits of coal but no water supply so they abandoned their search after only a few months in the area. In 1868, George Fenton homesteaded land near what is now downtown Prescott and started farming potatoes, corn and other vegetables. He named his farm "Fenton's Crossing". By 1870, Prescott had become an important trading post because it served as a stop on stagecoaches traveling between Tucson and Phoenix. By 1880, when there were over 100 businesses in town, most of them feed stores that supplied livestock with hay, oats, milk and other food items brought across country by wagon trains on their way from East Texas to points eastward. In 1890s there were several different copper mines operating in central Arizona including ones at Bull Run (now part of Mesa)and Fillmore Butte before finally being shut down due to environmental degradation some years later followed by abandonment until reopened as Copper King Mines National Monument in 1977-1978 again closed due to environmental concerns A group of men led by Jerald Culp decided they would develop this area into an agricultural community known as "Cheyenne" meaning “the new home” or “the promised land” because Cheyenne was seen as both America’s new goldfields open for settlement (1864) following Arapaho and Navajo displacement during Mexican US occupation (1848-1852), while also symbolizing hope for future economic growth since white Americans had shown interest in developing these regions since time immemorial despite lack of access or incentive from government officials at that time They began purchasing parcels of land along Tecumseh Creek starting around 1896 with plans to build homes/townships on higher ground overlooking Tecumseh Creek valley whereupon settlers began moving upriver from outside towns towards what would become today's downtown Prescott . The name Cheyenne originated from one man's idea – Jack London – who suggested its namesake place should be known not only for its beautiful scenery but also for resources such as coal reserves awaiting development . With incorporation having occurred on November 3rd 1907 all property within present day Prescott Valley boundaries were organized into two towns called Cheyenne & Winslow which existed side-by-side until 1912 when Winslow became an independent city chartering itself under separate ownership while still sharing same boundaries
