The history of The Optical Company of America begins with John D. Rockefeller's investment in 1892. At first, The Optical Company Of America produced only optoelectronic devices such as telescopes and microscopes- but soon they began producing what are now considered high-quality optics products such as binoculars, sunglasses, microscopes and telescopes. They even built their own plant in 1903 to produce these types of optics products. In 1907, Prescott Valley became home to Wernher von Braun's rocket research lab and von Braun began manufacturing optics components for space rockets using his company Kometa Optics Ltd.. For many years after World War II ended, Prescott Valley remained an important center for telescope production due to its location within easy driving distanceof many key metropolitan areas including Phoenix and Tucson. Many notable astronomers who visited Prescott Valley include Edwin Hubble (who used KometaOptics Ltd.'s telescopes at Mount Wilson), Clyde Tombaugh (founder/director emeritus of NASA) and Harlow Shapley (father-in-law of SETI).
