Prescott Valley is a small town located in the Apache County of Arizona. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The name Prescott comes from the Spanish word "Pasco" meaning "to go up." Prescott valley was first settled by Native Americans in the area that now includes Prescott and Bullhead City. The date of the first European contact with the area is unknown, but there are several references to human activity in this area as early as 1475. A group of prospectors led by George Sutter journeyed through Prescott Valley on their way to find gold during 1849-50. They named an existing stream after General James Kearny, one of their number. In 1863, wagonloads of Mormon settlers arrived in Prescott Valley and began construction of what would later become Brigham Young University (BYU). At that time it was thought that only Mormons could build such a large university; however, within 10 years all other groups had also founded universities in or near Prescott Valley. Today, BYU has over 100 campuses throughout North America and many international locations. One significant event which took place here occurred on November 17th, 1912 when President William Howard Taft addressed a crowd of citizens gathered at his ranch for a horse roundup organized by Bishop Talmage Mason (later Archbishop Thomas Mitty). Taft became known for his cowboy ethic and urged participants not to hurt any horses while taking them home to be sold into slavery across America's Great Plains. The event marked an important turning point for Arizona Territory and helped lead to its annexation into the United States in 1912.

Many people from nearby Window Rock founded their businesses here during the late 1800’s when it was easy to access oil wells in what is now Apache County. Today, many residents of Prescott Valley continue to work in industries such as mining, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.
