Ammunition history in Prescott Valley, Arizona dates back to the early 1800s when the area was part of Mexican land. The first ammunition being used in the area was shothells which were small rounds of lead and shrapnel fired from a cannon. After the Mexican-American War, American settlers began moving into this region and began to bring their own artillery with them. By 1892, Prescott Valley had become an unincorporated community and Ammunition Plant No. 1 was built on the now defunct Rancho San Luis Rey Indian School property northwest of town. The plant produced high quality ammunition for cowboy guns and rifles until World War II when it became a munitions plants for the USAAF during World War II. During World War II, ammunition production at Ammunition Plant No. 1 increased as war effort escalated in Europe. Ammunition production continued until 1957 when it was closed down due to budgetary constraints within United States government arsenals nationwide. In 1997, Ammo Plant No. 1 reopened as an antique store and museum called "The Arsenal."
