In 1847, Mariano Pieston founded what became known as Tucson because he wanted to establish a trail connecting Prescott with Santa Fe (now Albuquerque, New Mexico). The City of Phoenix was established on December 15, 1898 when business man James Wetherbee donated land for a public square and commercial district called "Wetherbee Square." In 1912–1913, mayor Elihu Fleischer developed Scottsdale into an upscale resort town with large tracts of undeveloped land near downtown. At its peak during World War I, Scottsdale had more than 100 businesses and 1,000 residents; however it declined after the war due to prohibitionism and other economic factors. Today Scottsdale has about 30 businesses and 200 residents. The University District neighborhood began to grow rapidly around Seventh Avenue and McClintock Road in east Mesa between 1960 and 1970 when new students commuting into central Phoenix moved into old single-family homes along 7th Avenue NW or San Pedro Drive NW adjacent to Mesa Community College while other nearby institutions like Arizona State University were expanding westward. This residential growth stopped abruptly when buses discontinued service southbound on McClintock Road just south of Interstate 10 until 1977 which led to displacement of many low-income families from their neighborhoods

When the United States acquired Arizona from Spain in 1848, it was a land of wild and rugged desert. The area now known as Phoenix was first settled by the Arizonans in the 1840s. By 1860, Phoenix had become a thriving mining town with its own railroad, but harsh weather and natural disasters kept it alive for only a few decades. In 1912, Phoenix became one of the cities that joined Los Angeles County. Today, Phoenix is home to more than 1 million people and is one of the most diverse cities in America. In 1847, Mexico gained control of parts of southern Arizona following their victory over American forces at Buena Vista Creek. This led to increased competition for Mexican Territory lands between Mexicans and Anglo-Americans. In 1850, Congress passed a bill giving President James K. Polk an option to purchase all or part of Arizona from Mexico if he found $5 million available for such an endeavor. Polk chose to buy only Tucson and Santa Fe Valley--a decision that angered some Arizonans because they felt their region had been unfairly taken away from them without their consent or knowledge. The discovery of gold in California in 1849 drove many miners into Arizona Territory; however, this new gold rush mainly resulted in men prospecting for Silver rather than Gold. In 1863, gold was discovered north of Tucson on what would later be called Tombstone Field (the field where Edmond Sweeney’s claim were found). This led to increased migration into Tucson by miners looking for a better job opportunity; however, due to strong Native American resistance and skirmishes between settlers and Apache militants (known as The Good Fight), little Gold was found until 1865 when Homicide Chief Manuel Antonio Lopez struck first with his claim at Saugus Mesa southeast of Tucson – becoming one of history’s earliest mineral discoveries in that territory! With new technology including photography during this time period photos depicting local geography began being published which helped spur development efforts within the fledgling cityscape around today’s downtown core: Pioneer Square! Phoenix quickly became known as “The Gateway To The West” because it served as a transportation hub linking California with points eastward across The Great Western Desert before finally reaching Las Vegas via wagon trains crossing the Colorado River near present day Scottsdale on July 29th 1861….. marking the beginning of what would eventually become an era where commercial railroads filled much needed transport corridors across deserts!
The Phoenix area was first settled in the Late Prehistoric period, by nomadic bands of the Navajo. The region became a part of Mexico in 1821, when Arizonans voted to become a U.S. territory. The city of Phoenix was founded on January 6, 1847, as the capital of Arizona Territory. On November 16, 1912, Arizona statehood was granted to the state of Arizona andPhoenix became its capital.
