The Optical Collection features glass instruments used in optical science including microscopes and telescopes. These tools were used to study nature during the seventeenth century until they were replaced by more modern technology in the eighteenth century. In addition to microscopes and telescopes, other objects on display in this room include lenses for vision correction and eyeglasses for distance viewing. The Optical Collection also contains books about optics dating back to 1553 when Johannes Kepler published his book On Celestial Bodies with an Essay upon their Diameter. The Scopes Gallery is home to one of America’s largest collections of crossbows ever collected together! This exhibit includes over seventy bows from around the world along with accessories such as arrows, quivers/lightsticks/lasers/optics equipment etc., all donated by collectors who have volunteered their pieces for this exhibit. This gallery also features replicas of some of America’s most famous telescopes including those at Kitt Peak National Observatoryand Long Hill Observatory in New York City
