Cotton farming became an important economic sector in the early 20th century but when World War II ended production ceased because of air raids which destroyed many factories in both cities; however some continued operations until after 1945 when they closed due to lack of demand for cotton after war shortages brought prices down worldwide. In 1946 Peoria incorporated as a city under state law No 7362; it had a population of 14,812 at that time.
