Peoria is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 61,876 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Maricopa County and home to the Peoria City Hall and the Peoria State Fairgrounds. The city also lies within Apache Junction National Wildlife Refuge. Peoria was founded in 1868 as a small post office called "Pioneer" by George Hinkle, who built a trading post on the American River around this time. Pioneer had been named after Daniel Boone's group that explored what is now Arizona in 1769-1770. In 1870, pioneer Elias Howe moved his family from Providence, Rhode Island to Prescott when he became sheriff of Maricopa County; Pioneer became part of Prescott. In 1881, Territorial Governor Don Carlos Buell designated Peoria as the new county seat of Maricopa County based on recommendations from Chief Justice James Ayer and other commissioners appointed to oversee land grants given to residents of Phoenix during the territorial period including 6 square miles (15 km2) for a courthouse and an adjacent jail which would serve as both courtrooms and detention cells for criminals awaiting trial or serving sentences under state law at that time. The original courthouse was built on Broadway between Seventh Street (now Interstate 10) west of today's McDonough Square shopping mall and Eighth Street east of downtown Peoria; it burned down in 1907 while under construction but was replaced by present day City Hall building in 1912 following plans developed by then-Mayor Harry Chandler with help from banker/developer John Beattie Ida McKinney served as first female mayor from1974-1978. Today’s First Lady Michelle Obama lives in nearby Scottsdale until she returns to live in Washington D.C., where she works as an Advisor forThe White House Historical Association since 2005 . As one half mile (1 km) south near McDowell Square stands Peoria’s long predecessor Pioneer Mine & Mill – once Europe’s largest open-air gold mine – mining operations ceased operations following passage of Arizona Mining Regulation No . 827 effective December 15th 1912 although shafts remain operational still today among some 240 abandoned mines statewide claiming over 1 million ounces (40 gm) gold , silver and lead all discovered since!

Peoria is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 73,362 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Peoria County and the largest city in the county. The first people to live in what is now Peoria were Paiutes who migrated from northeast Mexico during the 18th century. In 1833, Anthony Widenius purchased 160 acres (60 ha) of land north of Peoria Creek from Manuel Cuevas and named it Widenius Ranch after his father-in-law, Danish immigrant George Widenius. A post office called Peoria was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1861, John Wesley Powell passed through Maricopa County on his way to California and named it after Mount Rushmore National Monument while he was traveling through Arizona on his way southward. On July 20, 1863 – four years before Arizona became a state – Congress created Maricopa County out of part of Apacheland west of Tucson as part of efforts to gain territory for the Union during the American Civil War. The cattle drives that began around Prescott soon extended into central Phoenix as well; by 1865 about 2 million head of cattle had been driven through Phoenix alone. In December 1865–January 26, 1866 Assistant Sheriff James Crippen traveled east from Prescott along what is now I-10 to expose Mexican traffickers operating near Yuma River Canyon where he killed six men including Joaquin Martinez and robbed some twenty Mexicans driving herds across federal lands west of Tucson into Indian Territory under Spanish jurisdiction
Peoria was founded by Manuel de la Vega in 1824 as the site of a military post. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1830 there were over 100 people living here. In 1833, Peoria became the capital of Arizonasince Mexico had ceded its land to Arizona. The city experienced great growth during the late 19th century as an agricultural center and manufacturing town, thanks to its location on the Pima Indian Reservation. After World War II, Peoria emerged as an important hub for Phoenix-based businesses.
