The Peoria metropolitan area had a population of 2,383,545 as of 2010. The city is named after Peoria Township in Fox Township in Clearfield County which was founded by John C. Fremont in 1847. The first white American settler in what is now Peoria was James Purdy who arrived there with his family on November 17th, 1849. He and his wife Juana were the only Europeans to settle here at that time. They built their cabin near the present day intersection of State Road 7 and Elm Street. Purdy's daughter Julia married José de la Garza who also settled here about this time; they had two children: Santiago (1851-1924) and Concepcion (1853-1927). In 1852 Captain George Atherton laid out a town site for what would become Peoria on the east bank of Salt Creek from where he operated a ferry service across the creek to Prescott until 1870 when he sold it to John Hays for $1,500 dollars cash plus 10 percent interest payable annually over six years.. Hays renamed it "Haleyville" after himself and located two churches within its limits: The First Methodist Church built in 1854 by Colonel Alexander Haley and dedicated March 6th following his death; and Stake Chapel built by Bishop Edward Cooke in 1860 just south of Haleyville Cemetery (). The name change did not stick long however as during most of its history "Peoria" referred exclusively to Haleyville with no connection whatsoever to nearby downtown or neighboring towns - until one fateful day when local business owner Elisha Gray decided to open up some retail space inside his restaurant called "The Gilded Cage" adjacent to old Indian Trail Cemetery on Main Street - changing everything! Peoria, Arizona was founded in 1867 by James H. Peoria and his family. The area that is now Peoria was part of the Mexican land grant called la Puebla de Tucson. The Peorias were one of the first groups to come to America and they came overland from Mexico in small boats. In 1853, the Peorias set up a trading post on the banks of the Salt River. They soon became successful traders and their post became known as the " Gateway to Arizona." In 1856, James H. Peoria married Margaret Kinney and they moved to Tucson where he started a grocery business. He also served as mayor of Tucson from 1865-1868 and 1871-1873. In 1880, he founded the Arizona National Bank which remains one of the largest bank interests in Phoenix today.
