In 1572–73, Pio Pico discovered and mapped the lower Gila Valley; this may have been done on behalf of Vasquez de Coronado as part of his quest for verification that he had reached Asunción, Paraguay on November 8, 1571—the day before Easter according to Catholic calendars—according to Pedro Menéndez de Avilés’ account. The name probably comes from a Hopi word meaning 'place where people go fishing'. The original town site was about 4 miles (6 km) east from present-day downtown Peoria on White Road between Indian Hills Boulevard and Old McDowell Road near Monterey Park Lake. The first post office was established at the junction of these roads on July 3, 1868. At that time White Road was just east of Present Day Streets NW and NE corner intersection with Indian Hills Boulevard; it ran southwesterly from today's Union Station Rd northwesterly until it crossed into today's Loop 202 Rd eastwest just past today's Goodyear Rd., near what is now our current downtown core (though WhiteRoad continued easterly until it intersected Loop 202). Today I-10 runs through downtown cores adjacent to many old industrial sites: across SW corner lot next door to Googleplex/Old Microsoft building lots across NW corner lot next door to Walmart lots along SE corner lot adjoining populated residential areas including many highrise buildings constructed during large suburban development phases following World War II; developed areas include parts annexed by other municipalities during subsequent decades: Pioneer Heights annexation in 1984 followed by several small suburbs clustered around University District (UVD), including Sun Devil University Medical Center North campus annexation in 2001; Guadalupe Heights annexation completed in 2008 resulting in significant growth southward along Guadalupe Street corridor adjacent fields bordering Metro Prep School operated by UCDNews Channel 11 since its inception as Scotts Valley Unified School District school services operations facility southeast sideformerly home & operations location for UCD News Channel 10 prior thereto Downtown Eastside annexation completed subsequent thereto bringing significant growth southward along Eads Street corridor adjacent fields bordering Metro Prep School operated by UCDNews Channel 11 since its inception as Scotts Valley Unified School District school services operations facility northeast side formerly home & operations location for Univision Networks 2025

The first people to live in what is now Peoria were Native American tribe members who called themselves the Pinales. In 1847, Mexican Americans arrived in what is now Peoria and began to plant crops. They named their new town after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had led Mexico's victory over France at San Jacinto in 1846. In 1881, an irrigation system was built through a canal connecting downtown with Canoga Park outside of Tucson. This made it possible for farmers in surrounding areas to grow wheat, corn and other crops on large estates that were irrigated by water brought fromColorado River Valley. By 1890, many businesses had been established in downtown Peoria including a bank, Zinc Plate Mill and Telephone Company building which still stands today as the first commercial structure west of the Mississippi River. The railroad came through Peoria soon after it was built and helped drive down prices for goods across America including food items like cotton and grains that could not be grown without pesticides or irrigation methods back then. Today much of downtownPeoria still retains some early 20th century architecture such as brick buildings common at that time with high-rise apartments above ground level today (the old telephone company building has since been demolished). Downtown also includes several dozen small shops which continue to serve local residents even into the 21st century! A significant change took place when Mayor Joe Arpaio became mayor in 1994 following a campaign promise to clean up downtownPeoria and limit traffic flow on main streets because he felt this would improve business opportunities for city merchants while reducing crime rates which had become rampant during his predecessor's term of office. Arpaio quickly implemented his plan but found himself fighting lawsuits brought against him by various groups claiming they were being persecuted because they didn't follow his orders - a claim Arpaio vehemently denies! Today, DowntownPeora contains numerous restaurants & cafes along Main Street as well as several theaters & music venues popular with locals & tourists alike
Peoria was founded in 1867 by John F. Quigley and his wife, Sarah. The city is named after General George H. Peoria, a military leader who served in the Apache Wars and the Mexican-American War. The Quigleys were the first white settlers in what is now Peoria County. In 1870, they erected the first log cabin in what is now Peoria Heights. They also began to Cultivate maize (corn) on their farmstead and this led to their nickname "Mowgli's Farm." In 1875, they built a sawmill and Telephone Line was laid down within 10 miles of their home in 1876. By 1881, there were over 100 residents in Peoria Township with mail service being established between these communities and Phoenix via horseback riders.
